FIRST FULL-TIME FIREFIGHTER
On August 25, 2004, Thomas R. Anderson was sworn in as the First Full time fire
fighter in East Hazel Crest’s history. He has a long list of certifications,
including Fire Fighter III, Pump Operator, Instructor, and Fire Officer I.
He started on the department as a junior fire fighter, has been a
member for 34 years, and holds the rank of captain. The captain’s
responsibilities will be to organize training sessions, conduct fire
inspections, improve safety, and to manage day to day operations.
Officer Promotion
Congratulations to our newest Lieutenant, Kevin Vallow. Kevin was promoted
to replace Patrick Rigsby, who stepped down from the position at the
October 2004 Fire Department meeting. Kevin has been a member for 7 years,
and is also a member of the Phoenix Fire Department.
Fire Department Looking for Volunteers
Are you looking for a way to help out in your community? As you may have seen in the movies recently, firefighting can be a very fun and rewarding experience. Right now we are looking for able bodied people to volunteer to make a difference in people’s lives.
By becoming a firefighter, you will become certified with the necessary knowledge to save people’s lives. You will learn CPR, how to use an automatic defibrillator, and become a state certified Firefighter.
To be on the department you must be able to donate time on Thursday nights to training, attend calls, and participate in the following types of activities: Station and Vehicle Maintenance, Fire Prevention Awareness, Fund Raising, and Various Special Events. As we are a volunteer department we do not get a salary, however we do receive $7.50 per call for our troubles and the satisfaction of doing good in your community. For additional information contact Chief Vallow at FireChief@EastHazelCrest.com or call the fire station at (708) 798-3902.
New Rescue Truck
The Fire Department is pleased to announce that we have received a
grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to purchase a new
rescue squad. The rescue squad will replace out 1650, a 1983
Chevrolet Suburban, which has given many great years of service to our
department. The new rescue squad will have all of the equipment
required to handle any medical or automobile incident we encounter
which does not involve a fire. Some of the highlights of the new
vehicle will be a winch, powered hose reels, and a forty-foot light
tower. Look forward to seeing our new vehicle in July-August of this
year.
New PA System
The next time you drive by the fire station you may notice the
addition of 3 speakers added to the outside of the building.
This is part of an elaborate P.A. system that has been installed.
The P.A. System has been installed to enhance the experience of the
different department functions: The Halloween party for example will
benefit by having the ability to have music playing and a wireless
microphone allowing the addresser to have a more interactive
experience with the audience. Also, look forward to new events, such
as a Fire Department fundraiser dance, new possible thanks to the new
P.A. System.
New Fire Truck
The Fire Department received an Illinois First Grant of $115,000 for the purpose
of purchasing a new fire truck and equipment. The department was able to purchase
a used 1994 E1 Engine and fully equip the vehicle with the grant money.
This vehicle replaces the 1968 engine at no cost to the Village.
